A Lazarus Soul
Influenced by The Fall, in A Lazarus Soul we find rooted the meaning of what making music is and having your own project. For this Dublin band, it is not enough to compose, to perform, or, as many other bands justify, just having fun. A Lazarus Soul understands music as a very personal way to contribute with something. It is a music born from the deepest part of themselves, a music made from the inside.

Brian Brannigan formed a lazarus soul in 2001. He roped in some buddy’s, Pat Barrett (The Hedge Schools), John Barrett (The Silent Minute) & Camera Shanahan (Dark Room Notes) to play on his first recording, entitled “alsrecord”. Sometime later, he duped Fin O’Leary (Mexican Pets) & the then 3-piece Future Kings of Spain (Bryan, Joey & Tony) for the live shows.
Over the next 7 years they shared the stage with such acts including Echo & the Bunnymen, The Ordinary Boys, Damien Dempsey, Gallon Drunk, Ex-Girl, Grandmaster Flash, Dave Couse, Schneider Tm, & The Third Eye Foundation. They released their second album, “graveyard of burnt out cars” in 2007, again produced by Joe Chester, spawning 2 popular singles, “icon” & “the day I disappeared”. “Through a Window in the Sunshine Room”, their third album was released in Jan 2011.

Interview with A Lazarus Soul
1. How did the band begin?
We began in Dublin, Ireland in 2001 by myself, Brian Brannigan. The idea of it being a loose collective of friends/musician playing on the record/ live so each album performance would be very different.

2. How would you define the sound of the band?
Ethereal electonic/ guitar soundscapes mixed with a heavy dose of lyrically honesty/ realism.
3. Talk us about your last work.
It’s a third album entitled, “Through a Window in the Sunshine Room”. It features some of our Irish underground heros, Ger Griffin (Rollerskate Skinny), Patrickl Barrett (The Hedge Schools) & Martin Kelly (Sunbear/ Ruby Tailights). Below is what some other people have said about it.

4. How are your concerts? What can we find there that we wont find on your studio records?
A Lazarus Soul gigs are very intense performances and of late we have been improvising. We completely remix songs for our gigs, in some cases only the vocal melody is the same. We play over these programmed loops, with only maybe a hours rehearsal before each gig. This keeps it exciting for us and no too gigs are similar. So the live experience is always very new for listener and completely different to the record. We only play a handful of shows each year.
5. What do you think about the music industry and what do you think is your place within it?
I think the music industry as we know it is dead. Sites like Soundcloud, Tunecore & Bandcamp are a powerful tools for the artist. However putting your music on the internet is like throwing a pebble into a vast ocean. You need promotion and that used to be the job of the industry and probably will still be, if they can catch up, in the future.
